The UPG1000 represents the ultimate enhancement of EML's patented
sensor shape and offers the user the unprecendented capability to
measure all types of precipitation (rain, hail, sleet, snow etc.)
using EML's uniquely designed aerodynamics. The addition of the
UPG1000 Wind Shield is recommended for highest accuracy. This high
performance sensor can be used in the harshest climates on earth,
for example one is currently being operated in Antarctica by the
British Antartic Survey (BAS). EML's UPG1000 is therefore our
recommended solution for areas which are predominantly subjected to
large amounts of snowfall.
The UPG1000 is modelled on our well-established SBS series
aerodynamic tipping bucket precipitation sensor. However, the
Universal Precipitation Gauge utilises heating elements to provide
a truly universal, general purpose sensor which works across the
full spectrum of precipitation types. The deep
aerodynamically-shaped funnel keeps outsplash to an absolute
minimum facilitating not only the measurement of drizzle at high
latitudes and heavy convective rainfall at the tropics but most
notably snow and hail.
EML's Universal Precipitation Gauge uses low voltage electric
funnel heating for snowfall measurements and therefore there is no
need for weighling load cells, antifreeze or periodic siphoning.
This attribute gives it another great advantage over and above
other solutions available on the market.
The British-manufactured UPG1000 is EML's recommended solution for
snowfall measurement. In locations of mixed and moderate snowfall
the aerodynamic shape is sufficient to gain a good representation
of preciptiation amount. To maintain this high accuracy in extreme
conditions the wind shield is strongly recommended and is also
supplied by EML.
